July… It’s easily one of the greatest months of the year (in my opinion). Summer vacation is in full tilt and people are out enjoying all that Michigan has to offer; the immense state parks, the vast amount of freshwater coastline, the beautiful weather, and craft beer.

Wait, what did I just say? How could I even compare the growing splendor of the Michigan outdoors to the product of a microbrewery?

It’s easy for this beer blogger. July is Michigan craft beer month. It’s legitimate! Breweries and craft beer bars all across this amazing state are celebrating with events, specials and even releasing some one-of-a-kind brews, likely to never be seen again. And it’s possible you live right by one of these places and don’t even know it!

Currently (and gaining ground), Michigan ranks #6 in the country in number of breweries and brewpubs with a brewing industry that contributes over $24 million in wages and a total economic contribution of more than $133 million. With 80+ such locations all across Lower Michigan and the UP, now is the perfect time to enjoy what Michigan has to offer.

To make it easier, the Michigan Brewer’s Guild is hosting their 13^th Annual Michigan Summer Beer Festival (July 23-24) in Ypsilanti. Here, festival-goers will have the opportunity to sample a variety of over 300 different brews from over 50 breweries. This event showcases how truly amazing the Michigan brewing industry is.

To think that we live in a state with such outstanding resources and products… it’s hard not to feel spoiled. This is a great time for all involved – the producer and the consumer.

What else could be more Pure Michigan then sitting on the beach, sipping a pint of your favorite hometown brew, and knowing you’re supporting your local economy. It’s a win-win!

So on this day, til the end of July, raise a pint of some Michigan craft beer and cheers the state of Michigan: The Great Beer State.

Make a weekend of it and enjoy the festivities in Port Huron. Follow the progress of the Pure Michigan Bayview Mackinac Coastal course and go boat spotting along the coast line all the way up to the finish in Mackinac.

See the fireworks from the best seat in the house – the Deck of a Tall Ship! Join us on the Appledore IV for a three-hour sail, a BBQ meal and the Bay City Fireworks. Departing from Wenonah Park at 6:00pm and returning at 9:00pm. Stay aboard and watch the fireworks at 10:00pm. Tickets include access to all Wenonah Park Festivities.

 4th of July Bessemer Blast 2010, June 30–July 4, 2010

This week long event has something for everyone. Come out and see an F16 Fighter jet fly over, parade, largest fireworks display in the Upper Midwest region, a mud run, a demo derby, 3 on 3 basketball tournament and a softball tournament. Come out for some small town charm and celebrate with them. Events are free to watch.

If someone told you that you could get spa treatments, such as facials, massages, microdermabrasion and pedicures for just $50, you would probably be skeptical. Well, ladies, it’s the truth! For just one week per year, participating spas in twenty states, including Michigan, offer select spa services for just $50 as a part of Dove’s Spa Week. This week allows those who have eliminated their spa visits due to the economy and those on tight budgets the chance to be pampered for less. Spa Week is also a great way to give first time spa goers a taste of what they can expect at a spa.

Having been one of the many to skip my frequent facials and pedicures for the sake of saving for a rainy day, I decided to splurge and give Spa Week a try.

I browsed through the selection of participating Michigan Spas that offered treatments in advance and chose The Premier Salon at Macy’s, Somerset because it was close to home and they offered a great selection of treatments. I chose the 50 Minute Facial and 50 Minute Massage. I called the spa, explaining that I would like to schedule an appointment for Spa Week about two weeks in advance, so I could get the discounted price. Already, they were booked solid during the week of the event but told me they could extend the pricing for an additional week. Perfect!

Like many of you, I was skeptical. Not that the cost would exceed $50, but that these treatments were perhaps “mini” versions of the regularly priced services. I soon found that I worried over nothing. On the day of my appointment, I was treated to 100 minutes of heaven! I was very pleased with my Spa Week experience and was given a 30% off coupon for my next visit as a “thank you” for participating in Spa Week.

I would highly recommend participating in this event next year if you didn’t get a chance to book an appointment this time around. If you can’t wait for Spa Week, many Michigan Spas offer deals and packages all year long.  You don’t have to live in New York or Hollywood to get luxurious spa treatments thanks to the great spas here in Pure Michigan!
