July… It’s easily one of the greatest months of the year (in my opinion). Summer vacation is in full tilt and people are out enjoying all that Michigan has to offer; the immense state parks, the vast amount of freshwater coastline, the beautiful weather, and craft beer.

Michigan Beers

Wait, what did I just say? How could I even compare the growing splendor of the Michigan outdoors to the product of a microbrewery?

It’s easy for this beer blogger. July is Michigan craft beer month. It’s legitimate! Breweries and craft beer bars all across this amazing state are celebrating with events, specials and even releasing some one-of-a-kind brews, likely to never be seen again. And it’s possible you live right by one of these places and don’t even know it!

Currently (and gaining ground), Michigan ranks #6 in the country in number of breweries and brewpubs with a brewing industry that contributes over $24 million in wages and a total economic contribution of more than $133 million. With 80+ such locations all across Lower Michigan and the UP, now is the perfect time to enjoy what Michigan has to offer.

At Founder's Brewing Company, enjoying a MPG IPA (Mango, Papaya, Guava) and Death (a black wheat wine). Cheers!

To make it easier, the Michigan Brewer’s Guild is hosting their 13th Annual Michigan Summer Beer Festival (July 23-24) in Ypsilanti. Here, festival-goers will have the opportunity to sample a variety of over 300 different brews from over 50 breweries. This event showcases how truly amazing the Michigan brewing industry is.

To think that we live in a state with such outstanding resources and products… it’s hard not to feel spoiled. This is a great time for all involved – the producer and the consumer.

What else could be more Pure Michigan then sitting on the beach, sipping a pint of your favorite hometown brew, and knowing you’re supporting your local economy. It’s a win-win!

So on this day, til the end of July, raise a pint of some Michigan craft beer and cheers the state of Michigan: The Great Beer State.

John Palmer is freelance marketer and current stay-at-home dad. An advocate of the Michigan brewing industry, John blogs frequently at www.MichiganMicrobrews.com and hopes to share his passion for Michigan craft beer with all craft beer enthusiasts and beyond.
I’m here today, preparing to emcee the Tulip Time luncheon, which is one of the community highlights during festival week. The luncheon on Wednesday is the kick-off to the Volksparade, where for over 80-years, the community has kept tradition by scrubbing the streets clean, just prior to the parade. Hundreds of Dutch-costumed townspeople carry brooms and buckets of water to literally scrub the streets…then dozens of bands follow with floats and the always popular Exhibition Dutch Dance groups “Klomping” along the route in wooden shoes. It’s a great honor and lots of fun to scrub the streets and to see so many people coming together to show their community pride.

This is Pure Michigan, at its finest!

A trip to Holland is not complete without taking in the 110,000 tulips at Windmill Island Gardens.

Like many other travelers, I arrived in the southwest Michigan coastal town of Holland expecting two things: wooden shoes and windmills. The tidily landscaped, downtown-centric city 186 miles west of Detroit delivers both.

Celebrating Holland’s Dutch culture

Holland thrives as a tourism destination because it’s more than a one-note blast from the past. Named for the home country of founder Rev. Albertus Van Raalte and his pious followers, Holland’s imported windmill, historic Dutch village and museums deliver Dutch history, complete with wooden shoes and Delft pottery. Millions of tulips bloom each May during the popular Tulip Time Festival.

But the founders’ strongest legacy appears to be a close-knit community that feels much smaller than its 35,000 population. Holland is a modern village built on the banks of Lake Macatawa, which meets Lake Michigan at Holland State Park, a beach area with a wooden lighthouse lovingly called Big Red by locals since the Coast Guard gave it its classic barn color in 1956.

Something for everyone

Holland is flat-out pretty and hospitable, especially when it’s ramping up for tourist season each spring. Bulbs planted fresh every fall bloom along city streets and a residential historic district. Nelis’ Dutch Village opens then, too, on the outskirts of town, with Dutch buildings, miniature canals and cheese- and shoe-making demonstrations. Nearby Veldheer Gardens blooms 50 million tulips strong.

A Holland businessman imported this authentic 12-story windmill from Netherlands in 1961

One of the best tourism stops is Windmill Island Gardens, with a carousel and simulated Dutch village. Its imported 12-story windmill is home to the nation’s first Dutch-certified female miller. A family passing through from Leusden, Holland, gives it the thumbs up.

But the most fun memorial to the ingenuity and hard work of Holland’s settlers is in the spirit of downtown. Renovated historic buildings deliver an updated version of the old-fashioned main street, with clothing boutiques, bookstores, coffee shops, a brew pub, restaurants and bars.

“Downtown Holland has had so much love and energy poured into it,” says Ruth James. The New York transplant came for Holland’s Hope College and stayed for scenery. “The fact that we can have shops like this is miraculous. It’s a testimony to the fact that we’re a true community.”

Travel Guide

Tulip Time Festival begins May 1 and runs through May 8. The festival centers around Holland’s Centennial Park and features three parades, concerts and theater, Dutch food, trolley tours and traditional Dutch dancers.

Holland feels a lot smaller than it actually is, because downtown’s inner ring is complete in and of itself with shopping, dining, tourist stops and two hotels. The majority of the vacation can be taken on foot.

Governor Granholm has declared April Michigan Wine Month, and the opportunities to take part in wine related activities during the next few weeks are endless.

If you have the opportunity to do so, start your Michigan Wine Month off with a visit to any one of the 71 wineries – 7 more to be added by the end of the year – located throughout the state. If you aren’t able to make it to one of the wineries, there are still plenty of wine related activities to partake in around the Metro Detroit area.

Visit Michigan Wineries

Many of the wineries kicked off their season the first weekend in April and are beginning to offer tastings of their 2009 releases. Visit the Pure Michigan site for a full list of all the wineries and a list of Michigan wine trails. I visit the wineries around the Traverse City area on a yearly basis – a relaxing weekend of wine tasting, beautiful views, and great food is a great way to welcome in Spring and say goodbye to Winter.

Wine Expo

This weekend, the Michigan Wine Expo kicks off. For wine novices who want to sip their way into the world of wine tasting, check out the Wine Tasting 101 seminar, while winos can skip the seminars and focus on the 300+ different wines being poured. I’ll be stopping by the Wine Expo on Friday, so be sure to say hi if you’re there!

Detroit Restaurant Week

On top of it being Michigan Wine Month, Detroit is holding its second Detroit Restaurant Week during the week of April 16-25, 2010 – for a fixed price of $27, diners can enjoy a three course meal at any one of the 17 DRW restaurants. Participating restaurants including The Whitney, Andiamo, Atlas Global Bistro, and Coach Insignia proudly serve a variety of Michigan wines; if you stop by one of the restaurants that hasn’t yet included Michigan wines as part of their offerings, you can always encourage them to do so in the future with a “Meal was fine” card.

Michigan Wine Flights

If you can’t make it up to one of the many wineries in Michigan during April, you can always try a Michigan Wine Flight at restaurants like Vinotecca in Royal Oak (they are currently featuring ‘Sex’ by Mawby, Shady Lane Cab Franc, and Bowers Harbor UnWooded Chardonnay).

If you’re looking to enjoy your Michigan wine in the comfort of your own home, you can purchase a few bottles at local stores and restaurants such as Joe’s Produce and Holiday Market. I always have a bottle of L. Mawby Fizz on hand, and you can’t go wrong with one of the many Michigan Cherry wines. Why not pick up a few bottles of Cherry Wine from each of the wineries that produce it, creating your own Michigan Cherry Wine flight, and plan a night in honing your wine tasting skills.

You can also join the online crowd in discussing Michigan wines by following the Wineries on Twitter list or participating in one of the Tweet & Taste Michigan (#TTMI on Twitter) wine tastings on Facebook and Twitter – Michigan wine lovers all around the world pick up a flight of the featured Michigan wine being tasted that session and compare tasting notes on Twitter.

Michigan Wine Council and Michigan Wine Country Magazine

On top of all the events planned around Michigan Wine Month, the Michigan Wine Council is also distributing the 2010 Michigan Wine Country magazine during the first few weeks of April. Anyone interested in receiving the latest issue can request a free copy.

Happy Sipping

I’ve only included a small sample of the Michigan Wine Month events occurring. For a full list of events, visit Michigan Wines. Know of an event that should be listed or were you one of the first visitors to one of the Michigan Wineries this month? Let us know below in the comments!
